Printed Doors
Stroud, Gloucestershire
Print illustrations direct to supplied doors
The newt doors are in a pool house converted from a traditional farm building for a large luxury holiday let in the Stroud valleys. The abundance of amphibians, 5 of the six UK species, living within 10 yards of the proposed conversion caused a very expensive ecology headache and mitigation strategy during the planning and early construction phases of the project. Once these hurdles were crossed however we thought that their occupation of the site required some recognition and a wildlife artist, Madeleine Smith, who was introduced to us, and had done some work previously printing direct onto timber suggested we do a similar thing in celebration of our amphibian occupants. The number of bedrooms in the pool house nicely matched the 3 species of UK newt and so Madeleine drew
3 portraits to match the size of the doors.
Madeleine then contacted Nigel Peeck at N3 and explained what we were trying to achieve. Nigel was most helpful and suggested printing a trial piece of timber prior to going through with the whole thing. With this achieved and the results fantastic Turland Joinery in Tewkesbury made up the doors to match the timber we were using to clad the walls and within the 50mm depth specification advised by Nigel. The results speak for themselves, we are thrilled with the end result and provide a fitting tribute to the rare ecology of the site.
